A note from the BPYC Coordinator

I wish to thank all of you for helping to make BPYC 2012-2013 such a successful and productive one.

We began September 29, 2012 with our nationally recognized Medications Take Back Day, collecting over 5,427.32 Lbs. and then topping our collection total again on April 27, 2013 with 6710.41 Lbs. These medications, now disposed of safely, are no longer in danger of polluting our water supply or risk of being misused.  Thank you to the Medications Take Back Committee for your commitment to bringing best practices and protocols to the Take Back Project and for serving as state and national consultants in effort to expand Take Backs and collections. Through working with multiple partnerships we have expanded to 25 permanent Lock box locations throughout the county.

During our October 17th meeting BPYC members met with the Student Leadership Advisory Group, a group of representatives from public and nonpublic high schools, to discuss issues that affect youth.

In February BPYC was honored by Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, CADCA, with A Dose of Prevention Award for outstanding prevention efforts in prescription and over the counter drug misuse, and was invited to facilitate a training called “Bringing Take Backs to the Next Level” at the CADCA Conference.  During the Conference BPYC Members witnessed our Legislators Congressman Fitzpatrick and Senator Casey be recognized with Congressional Leadership Awards for outstanding work in prevention.

This year members were provided with presentations on Gang Awareness, Family and Parenting Programming, Gambling Among Youth, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and had opportunities to network and share our experiences and resources.  Thank you to those that shared your summer safety programming and prom tips with the group.

Our May 22, 2013 meeting, via teleconference from the White House, was with the Deputy Director of Demand Reduction Mineta, Executive Office of the President Office of National Drug Control Policy, ONDCP, and Ms.  Robinson, Policy Analyst, ONDCP and Lt. Hernandez, Executive Office of the President Drug-Free Communities Support Program.  Results from the meeting were positive and we will be given an opportunity to meet again at our BPYC September 25, 2013 meeting.

Please join us at our June 26, 2013 meeting at the Drug and Alcohol Commission, Inc. or for more information email dfoisy@todayincbensalem.org.
Have a healthy and safe summer.
